The United Way of Eastern Maine (UWEM) and our partners are continuing to respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic to meet the short term, immediate needs, of individuals and families that will be impacted by COVID-19 as well as the long term impacts that have yet to be seen.
UWEM recognizes the potential for economic impact, unpaid absence, illness, or job loss related directly or indirectly to the virus, increased child care needs due to school and child care closures, and the potential risk of not being able to pay housing, utility and food bills due to financial strains.
Organizations that serve populations in need every day are finding themselves under-resourced to serve a growing demand for those services. As an organization we are working hard to raise both money and volunteers needed to respond to this crisis.
- Many folks are struggling to find the services they need during this time. 2-1-1 Maine is a free, confidential, and easy to remember number that connects people to thousands of health and human services in their community in times of crisis.

We understand many individuals and families have been affected by the outbreak already and more will continue to be affected. We are working to move resources to community-based organizations that are directly supporting local residents and families who are most affected by emerging health, economic, and social impacts.
While the Fund is not able to provide grants to individuals, it is funding community-based organizations that have experience and history of providing people and families with services and support. The complete list of organizations we have funded to date is here.

The COVID-19 Response Fund will prioritize community-based organizations serving Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Washington and Waldo Counties. We are doing this with a recognition that many local nonprofits serve workers and residents in our neighboring counties. We are being flexible with our funds to support needs throughout the multiple county region.
