FAQs

What if I need help?

Call, email or text:

When should I be ready for my shift?

Please be set up and ready to go 15 mins prior to your volunteer time.  We will begin to switch out cell numbers (the public will never have your number) as the shifts change so it will be helpful if you are set and ready to go.  Lag time at the end of your shift may be up to 15 mins as we switch out the phone numbers.  Have your chargers for laptop and cell phones ready to go.

What was that hashtag again?

Social media hashtag is #MaineUnited so take a picture of yourself on the phone during your shift and post with this hashtag asking friends and viewers to call (post the number to call..we will send that number out on Thursday and it will be at the bottom of the screen all day.)

What if the caller has a question I can't answer?

  • Write down their name and number to reach them at
  • Tell them someone will call them back
  • Email Kim or Mark from NEWS CENTER Maine with callers name, number and question and we can call them back for you

What are the Matching Mainers hours?

There will be three Matching Mainers hours on April 9 (during the live news casts). That means if you donate during these three hours, all donations will be doubled (up to the value of the sponsorship).

  • From 6:00am – 7:00am CMP will be matching up to $25,000 of viewers donations
  • From 12:00pm – 1:00pm Poland Spring, part of the Nestle Waters Family, will be matching up to $50,000 of viewers donations.
  • From 5:30pm – 6:30pm Bangor Savings Bank will be matching up to $25,000 of viewer donations.

What is Maine United?

Working together, NEWS CENTER Maine and the nine United Ways of Maine have established the COVID-19 Relief Fund to support community needs resulting from the impact of measures taken to stop the spread of this disease.

There is a great article here from NEWS CENTER Maine.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. Callers should consult with their tax professional for questions about individual deductions, etc.

How will funds be distributed?

United Way of Eastern Maine will collect and distribute funds based on a formula developed by the United Ways in Maine based on population density.

From there each United Way will distribute the funds to nonprofits in their region who are supporting COVID-19 relief efforts. More information about the nine United Ways in Maine is here: www.unitedwaysofmaine.org

Who will receive help from these funds?

The COVID-19 Relief Fund is a concrete way for people in Maine to donate to help folks throughout the state. Each United Way is responding to the needs in their respective communities, including food and shelter, as well as assessing short and long term impact. While the funds will not go to individuals directly, it will go to support those nonprofit agencies that are on the front line. Many of these agencies are feeling the stress with limited resources to help the most vulnerable in our communities, and contributions to the COVID-19 Relief Fund will help tremendously.

Why should I give to Maine United?

Mainers are very generous and the United Ways of Maine greatly appreciate their support as we respond to the emergency needs of people in our community. 100% of donations will go directly to support people in this time of need.
