Development Program
If you are passionate about your community and want to serve on a local nonprofit board in the future, this program is for you.
Nonprofit boards need leaders from all sectors, professions, backgrounds, and walks of life. Board service is a meaningful and impactful way to serve your community, but it can be challenging to know where to start and how to feel confident and prepared joining a local board. This program will guide you through all the essentials, including how boards work, getting to know your board, and your responsibility as a board member.
You will connect with a cohort of like-minded volunteers and explore opportunities for board placement.

Thank you for your interest in Heart of Maine United Way’s Board Leadership Development Program!
The program consists of six sessions facilitated by local experts, board members, and nonprofit leaders. Following the program, you will have the optional opportunity to connect with local organizations in need of board members to explore placement.
Most sessions will be at 700 Mount Hope Ave, Suite 101 in Bangor. Here is the schedule:
Tuesday, September 15: 8:30-12:00pm
Tuesday, September 29: 8:30-12:00pm
Tuesday, October 13: 8:30-12:00pm
Tuesday, October 27: 8:30-12:00pm
Tuesday, November 10: 8:30-12:00pm
Tuesday, November 24: 8:30-12:00pm
There will be a graduation event on Tuesday, December 8 in the evening.
Application Process & Tuition

- Applications are due on Tuesday, August 18.
- Acceptance emails and invoices will be sent to applicants following application close.
- Non-refundable tuition of $550 is due within 30 days of acceptance into the program.
- Limited scholarships are available through an application process. Awards are determined case-by-case according to demonstrated need and available funding and scholarship amounts may vary by applicant. Please complete the Scholarship Request form below along with your application if you wish to be considered for a scholarship.
