University of Maine
Dr. Katie Swacha is an Associate Professor of Technical and Professional Communication and the English Career Internship Director at UMaine. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses mainly in grant writing, business and engineering communication, and research writing. She is passionate about building connections between universities and local stakeholders and facilitating hands-on learning opportunities for students, for example through an ongoing grant writing and grant review collaboration between her students and HoMEUW.
At UMaine, Katie is currently working with a colleague on a book about sustainable English internship programs and leading a grant-funded project on integrating AI thoughtfully into the writing curriculum. Her non-profit engagement has included working on grant/developmental writing, research, and other communications projects with various agencies over her career, with a particular focus on organizations committed to food security, aging, and basic needs. Her work as the English Career Internship Director involves matching students with non-profit internships across the state. When not at work, she can be found swimming year round with her 3 young daughters or working in her garden.
