President & Chief Executive Officer

Matt Donahue serves as President & Chief Executive Officer of Heart of Maine United Way, leading the organization’s efforts to mobilize communities to action so all can thrive across Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, Waldo, and Washington counties in Maine.

Since joining the organization in 2020, Matt has helped shape United Way’s strategy, partnerships, and community impact, helping position the organization for continued growth and regional leadership. Prior to becoming President & CEO, he served as Vice President & Chief Impact Officer, where he led efforts to strengthen early childhood opportunity, support working families, and expand nonprofit capacity across the region.

Matt has played a key role in developing several of the organization’s signature initiatives, including the Bundle early childhood program, which connects parents and caregivers with resources that support healthy child development, and The COMMUNITY: Maine’s Nonprofit Hub, a collaborative space designed to strengthen nonprofit organizations through shared resources, training, and collaboration. Known for building strong partnerships across the nonprofit, business, and public sectors, Matt works closely with community leaders, donors, and organizations to advance collaborative solutions that strengthen communities and expand opportunity across the region.

Matt was recognized by MaineBiz as a 40 Under 40 honoree for his leadership and contributions to the nonprofit sector. He is also a graduate of the Bangor Region Leadership Institute and serves on the University of Maine Board of Visitors.

Matt lives in Bangor with his husband, Derek, and their two sons. He is an active community volunteer and currently serves as President of Bangor Little League.
