Eastern Area Agency on Aging has been serving Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, and Washington counties since 1973. With a specially trained and dedicated staff, we are able to provide seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers with a variety of options, opportunities, resources and referrals.

From our Nutrition Manager at Durgin Center -Recently, I had a Meals on Wheels recipient reach out to me to share about the impact our meals have made for his wife and him. His wife is nearing the end of her life after a battle with ALS (Lou Gerrigg’s disease) and he is her primary caregiver. He shared with me that his wife was such a beautiful housekeeper and always worked so hard to provide a lovely home for their family so he takes the responsibility of keeping the house up to her standards seriously. He shared that prior to starting Meals on Wheels, his evenings consisted of preparing the nicest meal he could, feeding his wife while he eats his meal and then helping to get her ready for bed and that after tucking her in, he would go back downstairs to clean the kitchen and make sure the home was as nice as had made it all of those years prior. He had a great respect for all his wife did for him and the family over the years. After clearing the frog in his throat, he went on to share that since starting Meals on Wheels, his work is a lot less preparing the dinner meal and that this has allowed him to sit and hold his wife’s hand and talk with her for a bit and then after they finish their dinner, the clean up is so easy that he does that and then goes about getting his wife ready for bed. There was a pause in his story so I took the opportunity to chime in and thank him for sharing such a lovely story with me and thanked him for providing such care to his wife. He then cleared his voice again and stated….”The best part of it all is now I can climb in bed with my wife after dinner and we can fall asleep together again! That is the biggest difference that Meals on Wheels has made for me and my sweet wife!”
