Hancock County Habitat for Humanity’s Aging in Place Housing Plus program helps older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities safely remain in their homes through home repairs and modifications. With many older residents living in aging homes that are costly to maintain and often in poor condition, this program takes a holistic, person-centered approach by partnering with local health and human services professionals. Together, they assess the home and the resident’s needs to create a tailored repair plan completed at no cost for those below 80% of the area median income. The program also connects homeowners to additional community services addressing health, hunger, isolation, and transportation. By enabling seniors to stay safely at home, this work reduces nursing home placements, prevents falls and ER visits, combats loneliness, and supports their ability to age with dignity in their community. Impacts are tracked through follow-up surveys to ensure ongoing improvement and sustainability.
