The Commodities Supplemental Food Program distributes monthly boxes of nutritious, nonperishable foods—like dry milk, canned goods, and fresh produce when available—to low-income adults aged 60 and older across a vast rural region. Partnering with 57 sites and over 140 volunteers, the program provided nearly 18,000 food boxes last year to more than 2,200 people. To improve access, 58% of sites offer delivery, including options for homebound or disabled participants. The program not only addresses food insecurity and supports health but also offers social connection during distributions. While food is federally funded, there is no support for program administration or coordination, making continued funding a challenge despite its clear community impact.
