Food AND Medicine believes that by working together with unions, farmers, community groups, small businesses, and faith-based organizations we will create solutions and positive change.

Success Stories.

From 2013 to 2016, Sue Hoyt was a volunteer leader in FAM’s former program that raised funds and provided support for local farmers’ markets SNAP discount, providing dollar for dollar match. At its height, this program raised over $30,000 annually to distribute to SNAP users for vegetables, along with other healthy food including meat and cheese, at local farmers markets.  Beginning in 2016, federally funded organizations began doing this work, so FAM was at a crossroads, because we could not continue our program. Sue, a resident at a Bangor Housing community on Ohio Street and a key member of our farmers’ market committee, started talking about how the residents at her facility would really love a garden. We didn’t quite know how that would fit into our work, but Sue gently, steadily, always with good nature kept bringing it up. We decided to take the plunge and built a garden at her location, Crestwood, along with six garden beds at the BARN. Six years later this program, through Sue’s vision, wisdom and steady support, has deepened and strengthened. Sue herself has since joined our Board and provided the same good natured, thoughtful wisdom to the whole organization.
