Maine faces significant food insecurity, with hunger rising 47% between 2021 and 2024. Many in Hancock and Washington counties rely on processed foods, contributing to diet-related health issues. Volunteer-driven gleaning efforts collect surplus produce from farms and distribute it to food pantries, meal sites, schools, and community meals. A community farm grows vegetables for justice-involved individuals and local programs. Annual county-wide food and fundraising drives fully support local food organizations. The Senior FarmShare program provides fresh, local produce to low-income seniors while supporting area farmers. Food providers and community groups come together through food security networks to share resources, collaborate, and strengthen food access across the region.
