Success Stories.

Jim considered himself a strong, independent, and vibrant man in his 80’s.  Up to a year ago he still was able to drive and have the freedom to go grocery shopping and run his weekly errands which helped him maintain his independence. One day his car broke down and that turned into the worst nightmare for him as he did not have sufficient funds to fix the car.  Than to make matters even more challenging, his health was declining, and he found himself not able to get around as good as he used to.  Jim reached out to the SEARCH/RSVP Program of Catholic Charities to see if there was someone that could help him out even though he had his adult children who lived in the same area where he lived, but they had little to do with him, so his isolation increased a 100% once he was unable to drive. There was a caring volunteer in our program who was willing to step in and help him.

Kathy has been a great match for Jim over this past year. They get along great, and she is so wonderful with him. At least once a week Kathy takes Jim grocery shopping and run errands in town. She has also been able to assist him to medical appointments and take notes for him so he can reference back to the visit. Jim knows that if it wasn’t for Kathy helping him out, he would not have anyone to help him or make it in life. She has truly been a life support for him during this time, although he will have to make some tough decisions in the future, having Kathy as his volunteer eases the pain of loneliness and isolation.
